Steve Johnston began playing the guitar at age 12. He Attended the University of Iowa where he studied music, music theory, Jazz improvisation, Jazz Combo performance and classical theory and composition. He played in the Jazz bands in his high school as well as at the University of Iowa. Steve has been teaching for over 30 years and has been teaching at Mozingo Music since 1987. Many of his former students have gone on to become prominent players in the St Louis music scene as well as nationally, including members of El Monstero, Plastic, Los Angeles recording artist and Breedlove Guitars sponsor Chris Van Duyn and many others. He's also traveled throughout the U.S. and Canada performing in various touring bands and bluegrass festivals and has played over 8,000 live performances in his career including Busch Stadium in St Louis twice, Scottrade Center, The Pageant, Peabody Opera House, Harrah's and Ameristar Casinos, Windsor Crossing Church and Joyce Meyer Ministries as well as virtually every live venue in St Louis as well as numerous appearances in Chicago, Minneapolis, MiIwaukee, and Kansas City ect. Touring bands include "Voyager" "Midnite Special" band "Abraham Rush" "Media" and "Elevation : The U2 Tribute". Local bands include "Cagney", "Adam's Edge" "Wax", "Kelly Wild", and "Boom". Steve has appeared on albums by Midnite Special, Voyager, Ace, First Flight, Marvin F Cockrell and Focus, Media, James A Jackson II, J.T., Mark Helton, Radiowave, Jesse James Gannon Truth, Jahmahl Nichols, Jim Stevens as well as countless other recording sessions and demo recordings. Steve is currently The guitarist for Grace Church St Louis as well as St Louis band "Paint The Earth" as well as "Elevation; The U2 Tribute", The Charles Glenn Band, and "Dogs Of Society : A Tribute To Elton John" "The Gene Dobbs Bradford Blues Experience" and occasional performances with "Good For The Soul" as well as freelance live work. He continues to do recording sessions and write/record music of his own and teach private lessons. Steve has experience teaching rock, bluegrass, jazz, blues, metal, country, acoustic fingerstyle, funk, fusion, and classical music as well as music theory, solo improvisation in all styles.
